Today's post will be extremely picture heavy and because of that I've decided to not write too much. As I was working on a cake order last week, I thought that it might be interesting to see all of the steps that go into making one of my delicious "masterpieces" (ha!). So I took some pictures of the work as it went along. Now, you get to see it all. Start to finish. Enjoy!

Obviously, I had already baked my cakes and started icing at the point when I decided to do this. Here is the first layer of the bottom tier with the filling layer of icing.
Now I have to level the top layer.
I remove the scraps to leave a perfectly flat layer of cake.
Set it on top of the bottom layer...
and begin the icing process. I'm just using a large pastry bag fitted with an icing tip to make the icing process go quicker.
Then I use a bench scraper to smooth the side of the cake.
Nice and smooth
Then I smooth the top.

Beautiful.

Now I do the same things for the top tier.

Both tiers, nice and smooth. Now they go into the fridge to firm up a little.
Here are the fondants and coloring I'm using for this cake. I like to use premade fondant because I think it tastes better, is easier to work with and I don't have to worry about the huge mess of making fondant. Electric pink food coloring from Americolor.
Add some color to the fondant...
and knead away.
Finished fondant color. Set it aside while I work on the details.
Very blurry picture. I need to dust the detail pieces with edible pink glitter.
Sparkly.
Sparklier.
Time to roll the fondant.
All rolled out
and draped over the bottom tier.

Smoothed and the excess is cut away.
Next tier's turn
Trim away the extra fondant.

Place supports in the bottom tier along with a nice glop of icing for good measure.
Top tier goes on carefully and a dowel driven through it all for stability.
Black fondant for details.
Stripes go on the bottom tier

Cut out some pink stars
Glitterize the stars and place them on the stripes.
Black diamonds go on the top tier.
More stars and add the icing borders.
Add the final details and ta-da! Cake complete. Time to clean up the humungoid mess this baby left behind.

LOVED this, Hannah! I would have liked to see how you made those beautiful daisies too. See that? My husband's right. I'm just never satisfied. *sigh* :) You are a genius with those cakes!
You are so talented! Pretty cake.
