Harvest Monday!!

I actually have a harvest for today. Granted it's like the smallest harvest in all of history, but a harvest nonetheless.

There are 4 eggplants from the plant that came up by itself in late July. While everything else was dying or struggling severely, this eggplant plant couldn't be stopped. Of course, we don't like eggplant here too much so it stinks that it was really the only thing doing anything. These eggplants actually went straight to the chickens. They were appreciative.

The big news is that tiny little tomato. It's the first of the fall tomatoes to be ripe. I don't think any others are even close to being ready yet, so this was special to me. It was the most delicious little tomato I've ever had. Hands down my favorite cherry tomato so far. It was very sweet but without losing that tomato flavor that I love. The package said it was an Isis Candy tomato, but it doesn't look too much like the pictures I've seen so far and a large amount of the seeds I've gotten from this person have not been what they were supposed to be. I'll save the seeds either way because this baby is a winner.

I actually had to buy a couple dozen eggs yesterday. It was the first time I've had to buy eggs since April. I have my brother-in-law's wedding cake to make this week and it's the largest cake I've made to date. Mike took two dozen eggs with him camping last weekend so we ended up a little short. Anyway, it was so interesting to me to compare our girls' eggs with the store bought ones. When they first started laying, their eggs were so tiny and cute. Now Blondie's eggs are humongous! They barely fit in a regular egg carton.

Here's a picture to compare. Blondie's egg is on the left and the store bought is on the right. Now I must tell you that this Blondie egg was on the small side for her, but it's still bigger than the store bought egg!

The Franks' eggs are about the same size as the store bought eggs. Maybe a touch smaller. They are prettier though for sure.

We are actually getting rid of our chickens though pretty soon. It was great having them and learning how to care for them. We now know that if we ever needed to have chickens for whatever reason, we would know how to raise them. Having those kind of skills, I feel, is important. But in all honesty, those suckers are loud in the morning. Definitely not ideal for our living situation at the moment. Mike's aunt, who just got a few pullets herself, will be taking them for us. They will have a very good life living on their land with all of their goats, horses and emu.

Head on over to Daphne's Dandelions to see more Harvest Monday blog posts.

Chickens are loud? Like how loud? My husband and I are considering getting some Bantam hens just so we can have fresh eggs but I have really close neighbors so I don't know whether or not we will do it. I hate to have our neighbors angry at us.
I love your eggplant harvest. Too bad you don't like them!! Not even eggplant parmesan? That's my favorite way to cook eggplant.

I wish we could have chickens! But no, not in a subdivision...
I had lots of chickens when I was young, I believe they were the Bantam kind. I don't remember them being loud...but it has been a long time!
I don't like eggplant either, but they sure are pretty! Too bad, but good for your chickens!

Really they're only loud in the mornings and when they're laying their eggs. Most of the day they're very quiet, but our neighbors are right smack next to our house and I'm sure if the chickens are waking us up in the mornings, they are definitely waking the neighbors up too.

I'm glad your kids got to be around chickens and see how they're raised. It's a life experience. I wish I had chickens, but we live in the city. Can't have them here.

Hey! Maybe the "egg"plant was a sign that you should keep the chickens.

Keep up the good work. Your kids ARE watching.

I really would LOVE to be able to keep the chickens. They are so much fun and kind of act like little puppies the way they follow me around the yard, but we just can't unfortunately. Someday when we have land, chickens will most definitely be there with us.

I've never heard of chickens being loud before (well roosters, but not hens).

Glad we can't hear the Franks from here...lol! :) Nice eggplants too!
Good luck on your wedding cake...I know that it will be super awesome.

No rooster here, but yes, the hens are definately loud. They advertise after they lay an egg, and they squawk loudly when there is a cat in the yard or a hawk above in a pine tree. When they hear me in the house they come up by the windows and "talk" to me. Glad we have an acre for them. No neighbors have complained. If they do I'll offer them some eggs and the taste of fresh eggs will make them happy. Sorry you have to give yours away.

It makes me happy that your hens are going to a good home and not to some vicious chicken killers. You could always bring the little angels here, to the St. Holiday Avian Sanctuary. We have a five-star rating. I love you.
